Prevention is better than cure

Breast cancer is thought to be caused by a combination of our genes, lifestyle choices and surrounding environment. Anyday, prevention is better than cure and we should all give this a thought.

There are many things, or factors, that can increase or decrease the risk of developing breast cancer. One of the biggest risk factors is increasing age. At least four out of five breast cancers occur in women over 50.

In a small number of cases, breast cancer runs in the family. Most women with breast cancer do not have a family history of the disease or the faulty genes linked to breast cancer.

You can lower your risk of developing breast cancer by making changes such as drinking less alcohol, maintaining a healthy weight and being regularly physically active.

One of the biggest reasons for the high mortality rates is late diagnosis which is primarily due to lack of awareness and the absence of proper breast cancer screening programme. the majority of breast cancers are diagnosed at a relatively advanced stage.

The earlier breast cancer is diagnosed, the better the chances of successful treatment.

Women aged 50 and over should get a screening done every year or maximum every 2 years. This way health can be kept in check.

Regardless of age it’s important to be breast aware as most breast cancers are found by women noticing unusual changes, taking the initiative and visiting their doctor.

All women should be breast aware and women aged 50 and over are entitled to free breast screening.

Recently I got to be a part of an #experientialsessionand attended a very informative session where the topic discussed was all about Breast cancer. The session was held in associaltion with @ckbhospitalforwomen. Dr.Mandeep guided us well through the whole session and answered a lot of queries.
As a woman, after a certain age it’s extremely important to be self aware and conduct self check. Also, one should keep an eye for any change in shape, size of breasts or any kind of lump and discharge from the breasts. Cancer can be treated well if diagnosed at an early stage. One special feature that caught my eye was TBE (Tactile breast examination)
